Saline Implants Vs Silicone Implants
Breast augmentation is the most popular plastic surgery in the US that approximately 300, 000 women undergo this procedure every year, according to a survey by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Meanwhile, there are only two implants approved by the US Food and Drug Administration: the silicone implant which is filled with a gel-like material and the saline implant which is filled with saltwater.

Between these two types of breast implants, the silicone version provides a more natural result because the gel filling can perfectly simulate the movement and "feel" of the real breast. Despite this advantage, silicone implant is attributed to a higher rate of infection and capsular contracture in case of a rupture.
Patients who receive silicone implants are also required to undergo an MRI scan every two years since a rupture may go undetected for years.
Because of the higher risk of complications, most women have preferred the saline implants which may not provide the most natural result unlike the silicone version. However, this type of implant is significantly safer since it is only filled with saltwater which can be safely absorbed by the body in case of a leak.
New Implant: Combining the Benefits of Saline and Silicone Implants
There is a new saline-filled implant which can simulate the natural result of the silicone because it uses a perforated shell which can effectively simulate the movement, shape, and feel of a real breast tissue. And as soon as this implant is introduced in the market (this is still under clinical trial), plastic surgery experts believe that women would no longer have to choose safety over aesthetic or vice versa.
According to a recent survey, about 60 percent of breast augmentation patients in the US choose saline over silicone implant due to safety reasons even if the former does not simulate the movement of a real breast and is prone to wrinkling particularly on women who have less glandular tissue and skin.
Fortunately, the new saline implant has a design that will allow doctors to put this very close to the chest wall with the edge low in order to solve the wrinkling problem common in the standard version.
