New Procedure to Reduce Pain And Scarring After a Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation is the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedure over the past several years in the US, according to the surveys conducted by the American Society for Plastic Surgeons.
Meanwhile, this procedure has always been associated with prolong recovery period that may last for several weeks to months, preventing patients to resume their normal activities and go to their work. And in most cases, the recovery is associated with pain and discomfort which is why patients rely on pain medications.
Fortunately, there is a new pain management treatment that would not just alleviate the discomfort and pain after the breast augmentation surgery but also reduce scarring. Called as the ML830, this laser treatment has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration as an effective way to reduce the post-operative downtime related to this plastic surgery.
Advantages of Pain Management Treatment through Laser
This laser treatment, which is specifically designed for pain management, has no reported side effects and involves no pain because it does not use thermal heat which may cause blisters or burns on the skin.
According to a survey which involved 125 plastic surgery patients, about 80 percent of the respondents have reported a significant improvement in scar and pain after undergoing the pain management treatment for four months. And with this finding, many doctors are recommending this procedure not just for patients who will undergo breast augmentation but also other invasive cosmetic surgeries such as face lift, tummy tuck, and body lift.
Other Pain Treatment for Plastic Surgery
Aside from laser treatment, a device called On-Q pump is also used for pain management with its ability to deliver pain medication directly to the surgical site without affecting other parts of the body. In this way, patients would no longer have to take oral medications which may cause nausea, diarrhea, and other side effects.
The device, which is inserted at the end of the surgery, has a very small tube where the pain medication is delivered to the breasts for several days. And because the device is portable, this can be worn anywhere exept when the patients are swimming or showering.
Generally, this pain pump device contains medications such as ropivacaine and bupivacaine (marcaine).
But unlike the laser pain treatment which has no reported side effects, this device is associated with redness, skin rashes, and numbness to the incision site.
And in case the patients feel any side effects, they should notify their doctors immediately to avoid the risk of complications.
